Hello St. Andrew’s!
As I’m writing, I’m reflecting on the fact that Easter last year would have been around this time, right before April begins. It’s nice that we’ll witness the warm weather becoming more of a permanent fixture this year in time for Easter! :)
Lent is fast approaching its end and soon the dolorous Lenten tunes will turn to a brighter key. I could go on for another page (or two!) urging you to savor the last musical moments of Lent… if you’ve caught on to my theme by now you know I love to sing the praises of darker, sadder shades of music…
Something in me is different this year. My mind, in the joy of the moment as it hears a trumpet tune while I practice, has forgotten the knowledge of musical tragedy; even as my skin has forgotten the bitter chills of winter under the present influence of constant sunshine. It’s almost as if both the melodies and the sun have not only grazed my ears or skin, but penetrated my bones. There is no time for grieving, they seem to say, for the time is past. Even as we toil along obediently with our liturgical calendar in the Lenten present, the Earth already embodies His resurrection, carrying us into the new season in spite of ourselves.
Happy Easter, Friends!
Your music director,
Audrey Drennen
